Security costs must be contemplated in order to minimize the theft of the LCCDs. Both the XO and the Classmate have built-in security features, reducing the need for additional expenditures. The Classmate has hard-wired anti-theft features,30 while the XO uses software-based security.31 While these systems will generally render the LCCD unusable for unauthorized users, they may not be sufficient to reduce physical thefts, particularly if the thief is not aware of these features. Having students take the LCCD home at night can reduce security costs. Conversely, having a locked or guarded location to store the LCCDs should be considered.
